Southend-on-sea is the famous seaside resort that lies on the coast of eastern England. Situated to the north of the Thames estuary, this quaint Essex town became famous in the early 20th century for its popularity amongst the upper classes for summer holidays.
Getting to Southend couldn’t be easier, whatever your method of travel. A stones throw from London, a short journey along the A27 or A13 means that the swimming costume and Frisbee wont be packed away for too long. Alternatively, the town also has great public transport links. Southend is well represented nationally in the sporting arena. Even with its small population and overshadowing from the major London clubs, Southend United, until recently, were competing in the second tier of English domestic football. The Shrimpers are currently enjoying their most successful period in British football, notably claiming the scalp of Manchester United in a league cup tie in 2006. They have also held the millionaires of Chelsea in an FA Cup tie recently, proving The Seasiders are a match for anyone on their day.
Although the town also has representatives in Rugby League and Union, the Football team is generally considered the sporting heartbeat of Southend. However, England star Alistair Cook and his Essex team mates do travel to the local ground for an annual county cricket fixture.
